How to get your Canvas API key

Cadence reads your courses, due dates, and grading weights from Canvas using a personal access token that you generate. It only ever accesses your own data, and you can revoke it at any time.

  1. 1Log in to Canvas at canvas.colorado.edu.
  2. 2In the left sidebar, click Account, then Settings.
  3. 3Scroll down to Approved Integrations and click + New Access Token.
  4. 4For Purpose, type “Cadence.” Leave the expiry date blank (or set one if you prefer).
  5. 5Click Generate Token.
  6. 6Copy the token right away — Canvas shows it only once — and paste it into Cadence.

Treat it like a password.

Anyone with this token can read your Canvas data. Cadence stores it encrypted and never shows it again, and you can revoke it anytime by returning to Approved Integrations and deleting it. If you don’t see “New Access Token,” your school has disabled student-generated tokens.
